Amazon.com is turning ten years old this week. It is fair to say that there are only a handful of companies throughout history who have completely transformed their industry. Standard Oil did it. Ford did it. For better or worse, Microsoft has done it. And so did Jeff Bezos when he created Amazon.com.
Ten years ago, the idea of buying books, much less Construction Machinery over the Internet was a foreign concept. But it worked and its created an entirely new way of shopping, forcing bricks and mortar retailers to change to survive. True, its been a bumpy ride for Amazon’s stockholders, but its clear that the bumpy times are long over.
Thanks to Amazon, I don’t think I’ve purchased a book, CD or DVD in a retail store in at least the past 3 years. And I don’t see any reason I’ll be doing so anytime soon.
