Forget about the jury trial I mentioned this morning. When I got back from Court this morning, there was a message from the other side’s attorney and when I spoke with him, he advised me that his client had filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday. For the uninitiated, this means the trial is off.
Normally, a last-minute bankruptcy filing would just annoy me a little. I hadn’t really finished preparing for this trial (that is what today was going to be all about), so there wasn’t all that much time into it at this point. This case is different only because our client was sending a witness all the way from Spain to testify tomorrow. Her plane lands in a little under 3 hours so there was nothing I could do to stop her from coming by the time we found out about the bankruptcy filing. If someone had told us about this Friday, of course, it would have been an entirely different story.
Sometimes the justice system can be pretty unjust.
