And all hell breaks loose apparently.
On Saturday, there was the terrorist attack on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. This is the second time in less than a year that this tourist area has been attacked like this. The motivation of the attackers is obvious — to drive away tourism and weaken the government of Egypt.
At nearly the same time in London, there was the apparently mistaken shooting of a Brazilian tourist by London police on the hunt for the 7/7 and 7/21 bombers. I actually heard about this story second hand while we were on the camping trip and it seemed from what I had heard as though the police acted reasonably under the circumstances. I’m not sure I was right in this initial conclusion but I do believe that the victim played a role in this tragedy in not responding to police orders. In either case, London is as much on edge today as New York was in the weeks after 9/11. It is not surprising that this tragedy happened.
There is good news out there, however. It looks like the Space Shuttle Discovery will take off as planned tomorrow.
