Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Cutting The Cord

by @ 7:10 am on July 27, 2005.

Yesterday, I called AT&T and cancelled the long distance on our home line. Now that Kellie and I both have incredibly generous cell phone plans from Verizon Wireless, it just doesn’t make economic sense to have a seperate charge for long distance every month. Between the minutes we have on our plans and the free minutes Verizon offers at night and on weekends, we will easily be able to call anyone we want at little additional cost.

This led me to start thinking about whether we should take the next step and dump the home line altogether. On the pro-side, it would save between $ 35-40 per month. On the con side, there is the fact that being dependant solely on cell phones means that we are charged not only for calls made, but also for calls received. On the whole though, this is just another sign of the convergence of home phones and cell phones. I don’t think it will happen anytime soon, but I do foresee getting rid of the home line at some point in the future……….

At the same time, there is also the Voice Over IP option.
