The Iran Problem

by @ 12:51 pm on August 3, 2005.

Stephen Green takes a look at the latest news from Iran and concludes that we really don’t have many viable options here.

I tend to agree. Military action at this point in time would seem to be out of the question. Unless and until the situation in Iraq is stabilized, it would be unwise to engage in another major war against a far more powerful adversary than Saddam Hussein was in 2003. First of all, we probably don’t have the troops and equipment to engage Iran at the same time we’re still securing Iraq and hunting al qaeda in Afghanistan. Second, committing to military confrontation in Iran while Iraq is still unstable will only guarantee that Iraq will become more unstable as the insurgents and terrorists exploit the fact that our attention is focused elsewhere.

The idea of Tehran having nuclear weapons should terrify everyone, but, right now, there seems to be little outside of diplomacy that we can do about it.
