One week ago, Hurricane Katrina was still called Tropical Depression No. 12, now its on the verge of becoming the biggest natural disaster to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew.

There isn’t anything I can say about this that isn’t being said elsewhere, but there is a personal element to this historic event. My Dad’s brother and three cousins live in the New Orleans area. With the exception of one cousin who has remained behind, they have all evacuated the area. What they will return to, only time will tell at this point. Bloggers closer to the situation than I are certainly more attuned to what’s really happening.

The sheer helplessness of the situation for the people who’ve stayed behind, though, just blows me away.
