Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Must See TV

by @ Tuesday, August 30th, 2005. Filed under 24, Television

The A&E cable network will be running a marathon to kick off its syndicated run of the Fox series 24. They’ll be running Season 4 over two days from September 4-5 and then starting off with Season 1 with regular Monday episodes.
At this point, 24 is probably the only show on my “can’t miss” list, [...]

Katrina And God

by @ Monday, August 29th, 2005. Filed under Hurricane Katrina, Religion

Its going to happen, I’m sure of it, if it hasn’t happened already. Someone somewhere is going to say that Hurricane Katrina was a “punishment from God.” It happened after 9/11 and it happened after the Asian tsumani. It also happens to be a total crock.
As Stephen Green said
We’re simply decent people who understand that [...]

Katrina And Oil

by @ Monday, August 29th, 2005. Filed under Economics, Hurricane Katrina

It really should not come as much of a surprise that the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina will lead to further increases in the price of oil and gasoline, at least on a temporary basis. This is how the market responds to events that disrupt supply, after all.
The problem is that I think its almost [...]

It’s a Malkinlanche

by @ Monday, August 29th, 2005. Filed under Blogging

My post about libertarian responses to government emergency powers was linked by Michelle Malkin and, as a result, my Sitemeter numbers have been going up and up and up. 245 visitors today alone, which is way above my average.
Bloggers have coined the term Instalanche for the effect of being linked by Glenn Reynolds of [...]

Responding To A Crisis

by @ Monday, August 29th, 2005. Filed under Hurricane Katrina

Over at Vodkapundit, Stephen Green has a great point about what we’re watching unfold on the Gulf Coast.
It amazes me, every time, how calm Americans remain when, ah, stuff hits the fan. Mostly, the folks in Katrina’s way have packed the things they just can’t leave behind, and headed north. They’ll stay in motels or [...]

Hurricane Blogging

by @ Sunday, August 28th, 2005. Filed under Hurricane Katrina

One week ago, Hurricane Katrina was still called Tropical Depression No. 12, now its on the verge of becoming the biggest natural disaster to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew.
There isn’t anything I can say about this that isn’t being said elsewhere, but there is a personal element to this historic event. My Dad’s [...]

Quote Of The Day

by @ Sunday, August 28th, 2005. Filed under General, Individual Liberty

From John Adams, 2nd President of the United States:
There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty.

Libertarians And Emergencies

by @ Sunday, August 28th, 2005. Filed under Hurricane Katrina, Individual Liberty

The Mayor of New Orleans has ordered the immediate, mandatory evacuation of the City of New Orleans. Given the size, speed, and projected path of Hurricane Katrina, evacuation is an entirely reasonable, rational thing to do. The question, though, is this — should the state have the right to order someone to leave their home [...]

If I Were President

by @ Sunday, August 28th, 2005. Filed under General, Government, Individual Liberty

Many of my fellow LLP’ers have been answering the following question:
“By some bizarre set of circumstances, you are the president as of now. Name the first 5 things you?d do. Level of difficulty: it must actually be stuff the president is constitutionally allowed to do.?

In no particular order, here’s my list:
1 Immediately pardon all [...]
