Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

The Last Days Of Summer

by @ 7:22 am on September 6, 2005.

I’ve asked this question several times before, but where did the summer go ? Memorial Day doesn’t seem as far away as it really is, and the Fourth of July seems like it was just yesterday. Yet, here we are at September 6th, the day after Labor Day, and the end of the lazy days of summer once again.

Our Labor Day weekend was unlike most others that Kellie and I have known together. Two years ago, we were in Chicago. Last year, we spent the week before Labor Day at The Homestead in Warm Springs, Virginia and then travelled to New Jersey to see my Mom, who was still in the hospital at the time. This year, we stuck close to home.

On Saturday, we went to the National Air & Space Museum Annex near Dulles Airport. The annex is in a full size airplane hanger and has actual airplanes ranging from World War I biplanes to

the Space Shuttle Enterprise.

One of the coolest things there was this:

an SR-71 Blackbird.

After the museum, we spent some time on an unsuccessful shopping trip and had dinner at Coastal Flats in Fair Oaks.

On Sunday, we pretty much stuck close to home.

Yesterday, we travelled from Old Town Manassas to Old Town Alexandria in a semi-successful search for Virginia wine. We ended up finding some Rappahannock Cellars Chardonnay, but it looks like we’ll have to deal directly with the wineries to get more of the Linden and Ingleside.

We ended the last weekend of summer with burgers and corn on the cob on the grill. All in all, a great weekend. Like the summer, though, it went by too quickly.
