Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Southern Blog Federation

by @ Monday, October 31st, 2005. Filed under Blogging, News About The Site

I am now a member of the Southern Blog Federation, a network of bloggers in the Southern U.S. Just in case you’re wondering, this is not an endorsement of Southern nationalism, or of the Confederacy, which I personally find distasteful, just a bunch of bloggers located south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
I hope the fact that […]

Putting Things In Perspective

by @ Monday, October 31st, 2005. Filed under Blogging

For some reason I have neglected to add her to the blogroll, but I have been a regular reader of Cathy Seipp’s blog for some time now. For those who don’t know, she is a Los Angeles writer and contributor to National Review. Definately conservative, more so than I am, but always an entertaining read.
Anyway, […]

Republican Socialism

by @ Monday, October 31st, 2005. Filed under Gas Prices, Politics, Republicans

Missed in the media’s concentration on Plame-gate and President Bush’s Supreme Court nomination, was this story from the Boston Globe evidencing yet again the distance between economic conservatives and the Republican governing elite.

CONCORD, N.H. –Republican Sen. Judd Gregg, New Hampshire’s fiscal conservative and chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, is calling for a tax
on excess […]

Let’s Hope He Got It Right This Time

According to the Washington Post and the rest of the media, President Bush will announce the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.
President Bush today will name appeals court Judge Samuel A. Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a source close to the White House. Alito, 55, serves on the Philadelphia-based […]

Are The Wheels Falling Off ?

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Politics

On Thursday, I linked to and wrote about, approvingly, this article by Peggy Noonan where she makes the argument that there is something fundamentally wrong in America that is being ignored by its elites, many of whom have adopted an “I’ve got mine” attitude and act more to protect their own interests than advance those […]

The One Class I Never Would Have Missed

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Humor

Professor Bainbridge links to this article at Concurring Opinions about a course in Wine Law being offered at the Law School at UC-Berkeley.
Not only would I have made sure I never missed this class if it had been offered at George Mason Law School when I attended, I would’ve volunteered for all the extra-credit research […]

Fixing The Third Branch Of Government

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Politics, Supreme Court, U.S. Constitution

Eric Cowperthwaite has an excellent post up about proposals to reform the judiciary, which I highly recommend reading.
In the post, Eric suggests the following steps to fixing what’s wrong with the third branch of government:
Supreme Court Justices should have set terms, rather than being appointed for life. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to […]

The Steve Martin Defense

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Humor, Politics

In one of his old comedy routines, Steve Martin used to say that the two simplest words in the English language, guaranteed to get you out of any trouble, are “I forgot.” IRS knocks on your door because you haven’t paid taxes in five years ? I forgot. On trial for holding up a liquor […]

Mind Your Own Business Chuck

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Islam, War On Terror

From the London Telegraph comes this report that Prince Charles will plead the cause of Islam when he meets with President Bush this week.
The Prince of Wales will try to persuade George W Bush and Americans of the merits of Islam this week because he thinks the United States has been too intolerant of the […]

Our New Toy

by @ Sunday, October 30th, 2005. Filed under Personal

It took about 5 hours and alot of test driving but Kellie and I came home yesterday with a new car. We ended up getting a 2006 Honda Pilot EX. Yep, that’s right, we got a big, bad SUV. I expect Greenpeace to begin picketing our house this afternoon.
