As recently as last year, people were saying that Penn State Coach Joe Paterno should retire. The Nittany Lions had been dwelling in the basement of the Big Ten for several years, and the team seemed tired. Well, they aren’t saying that anymore, especially not after last night’s 17-10 win at home over Ohio State, a win that puts the Nittany Lions in first place in the Big Ten for the first time in many years. Penn State is now 6-0.
I didn’t watch this game so there isn’t really much I can say about it. It was clearly a defensive battle, though, especially given that the only points scored in the second half came on a Penn State field goal.
It certainly has been a different year for the Buckeyes, and many teams in the Big Ten. Yesterday’s other big upset came when Minnestoa beat Michigan 23-20 on a last-minute field goal.
If nothing else, the loss to Penn State effectively ends any chance the Buckeyes had at the national title and, most likely, the Big Ten Championship this year.
