Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

What She Said

Michelle at A Small Victory has this well-crafted response to those who say Yankee manager Joe Torre should be fired.

You blame the front office for trading off talent for that grab at instant gratification. You blame Steinbrenner for sitting back while the team is taken apart. You blame some of the players for their failure to come through when it matters most. You blame Cashman, most of all, who at one time was considered a genius but lately leaves Yankee fans questioning his moves rather than applauding them.

You don’t blame Torre.

If they fire him I swear I will drain the Yankee blue out of my blood.

My sentiments exactly. The Yankees problems this year, and last, are clearly problems with the talent. The pitching staff is weak largely because Steinbrenner and Cashman are far too prone to the gimmick of bringing in a big-gun like Randy Johnson than they are with developing a staff (not that I mind having Randy Johnson in pinstripes at all).

For the last few years, Steinbrenner has refrained from the insanity he displayed in the 70s when he changed managers as frequently as some people changed socks. Hopefully, he won’t return to those bad days.
