As the vultures continue to circle over the nomination of Harriet Miers, the White House is dismissing critics of the nomination calling for its withdrawal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Thursday dismissed critics of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers who want her to withdraw from consideration amid new questions about her conservative credentials.
Spokesman Scott McClellan signaled full steam ahead with the Miers nomination, saying the White House lawyer had begun filling out a questionnaire required by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will consider her nomination, and hoped to turn it in early next week.
McClellan, during a contentious White House news briefing, dismissed any suggestion from the critics that Miers withdraw.
“Those are people that do not know Harriet Miers, because if you know Harriet Miers you know that she will make an outstanding Supreme Court justice,” he said.
Conservatives fear Miers would turn out to be a moderate or a liberal on the bench despite Bush’s repeated assurance that she shares his conservative judicial philosophy.
Those fears were further stoked by sworn testimony Miers gave in a 1989 Dallas case in which she said she would not belong to the conservative legal group, the Federalist Society.
“I have tried to avoid memberships in organizations that were politically charged with one viewpoint or another,” Miers said, according to a copy of the testimony put on the Drudge Report Web site.
And yet, according to that same story on the Drudge Report, Miers does not consider the NAACP to be “politically charged.”
A Supreme Court nominee from a Republican who turns her back on the Federalist Society ? I never thought I’d see the day, but apparently I have.
