Overnight, Hurricane Wilma, the 12th hurricane and 23rd named storm of the season was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center upgraded Hurricane Wilma this morning to an “extremely dangerous” Category 5 and put the Florida Keys on notice that Wilma could be heading its way over the next five days.At 5 A.M., a reconnaissance aircraft reported that Wilma set a record for hurricane intensity in the Atlantic, as the minimum atmospheric pressure of the powerhouse dropped to 884 millibars.
By comparison,
Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast, was measured at 902 millibars at its peak strength.
Right now, Wilma’s projected path has it turning toward Florida after it enters the Gulf of Mexcio, but as recent history demonstrates, things can change quickly.
