Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Learning A Lesson

by @ 9:51 am on October 23, 2005.

Yesterday was another one of those days where life teaches you a lesson. In this case, the lesson learned was —- don’t go driving around an apple orchard after a major rain storm.

Since I worked on Kellie’s birthday on Thursday, today was the day Kellie and I set aside to have some time today for some birthday-related fun. After breakfast at Sandia Cafe, a local hole-in-the-wall that specializes in Southwestern cuisine, we took a trip out to Hartland Orchard in Fauquier County to pick some apples and buy some cider. Well, it had rained like heck Friday night and Saturday morning so it was pretty soggy when we got there. Anyway, as we drove further back into the orchard we ended up getting our lovely 2000 Honda Accord stuck in the mud and needed the assistance of the orchard owner to get the heck out of there. Kellie thought the situation was hilarious but I wasn’t really that amused at the time — although looking back on it does have its amusing aspects.

Anyway, after getting the car situation straightened out we spent a couple hours picking about a half a bushel of Red Delicious Apples. What we’ll be doing with them I have no idea at this point. We also picked up some fresh apple cider and have decided to make a trip to Hartland an annual tradition.

Last night, I took Kellie out to Firefly a new-to-us restaurant near Dupont Circle that we had seen in our travels around downtown DC. Aside from a few problems with our server it was a really great experience. The food was fabulous and the atmosphere quite inviting, although it was pretty noisy by the end of our evening. This one will definitely be on the list from now on.
