Its just been reported on ABC Radio that the White House announced today that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination to the Supreme Court. No link yet, but I’m sure one will follow.
Update: The Washington Post story on the withdrawal is here.
As Michelle Malkin says, what a relief. Now, Mr. President give us a real nominee.
And here everyone in Washington thought that Plamegate would be the big story today.
Based on this excerpt from Bush’s statement on the withdrawal, one might also suspect that the White House followed the Krauthammer strategy:
“It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House — disclosures that would undermine a president’s ability to receive candid counsel,” Bush said. “Harriet Miers’ decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers — and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her.”
On a happier note, withdrawing probably means Harriet will have more time to work on her blog.
Update: Yes, I am happy this happened. Miers was not qualified for the position for which she was appointed and subjecting her to confirmation hearings would have been cruel and pointless. While the White House statement may have mentioned the “Krauthammer option,” the truth is that Bush’s base abandoned him on this nomination, as well they should have.
Now, its time to move on. In all honesty, by tomorrow, this story could be old news depending on what happens in Palme-gate.
Further reaction to the withdrawal by Captain’s Quarter’s, Outside The Beltway, Decision `08, and Pundit Guy. Meanwhile Don Surber has a different view of today’s events, fellow LLP Blogger Peter Porcupine talks about the aftermath of this debacle, and the California Conservative is asking for everyone’s take on this story.
