An Anniversary Worth Celebrating

by @ 10:15 am on January 1, 2006.

Over at The Volokh Conspiracy, David Kopel reminds us that it was 15 years ago today that the Soviet Union ceased to exist, bringing to an end a 70 year era that saw the death of hundreds of millions and the enslavements of millions more. It was a day that many at the time said they never thought they would see happen in their lifetimes, but it was, in a sense inevitable as Kopel points out:

Today’s anniversary, however, should remind us that the true pragmatists are those who recognize that totalitarianism is in constant danger of collapse because of its own internal contradictions, and that if free nations remain strong and resolute, they can bring down a superpower.

Amen to that.
