I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Okay, I’m a few days late, but now that the Super Bowl matchup has been set, I’ve got to say that I am, without question, rooting for the Steelers.

When I was a kid growing up in New Jersey, there really were only two teams you rooted for. It was either the Dallas Cowboys or the Pittsburgh Steelers. Given that they were the two teams that dominated the NFL during the late 70s (and given the fact that both the Jets and Giants pretty much stunk during that same period), I guess it really wasn’t that surprising. Among the boys, rivalries developed, and friendships even divided over the question of who was the better Quarterback — Roger Staubach or Terry Bradshaw.

It probably had something to do with the fact that my family came from Pennsylvania, but I was a die-hard Steelers fan during those days. Four Super Bowl wins in five years. Mean Joe Greene. Potential future Governor Lynn Swann. I loved it all.

When the Steelers made it back to the Super Bowl in 1996 against the hated Cowboys it was like I was a kid again. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be and the boys from Dallas won.

This year, even though I admittedly haven’t paid attention to Pittsburgh in years, I have no doubts about who I’ll be rooting for on February 5th. Go Steelers !
