My Top 5 Movies

Chad Dotson at Commonwealth Conservative has an open thread going about favorite movies.

Here are my choices:

(Tied for # 1): The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. What can I say about these movies that hasn’t already been said  ? Stellar performances all around. A plot that works even today, and enough moral dilemmas to keep even the most skilled philosopher up late at night. Truly two classic examples of American cinema at its best.

Vertigo: Alfred Hitchock and Jimmy Stewart, but not your father’s Jimmy Stewart. Scottie Ferguson is about as far away from George Bailey as you can get, and Kim Novak is absolutely stunning. And, in a supporting role, there’s the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge, both of which make appearances in some absolutely stunning examples of cinematography at its best. This movie is truly Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece.

3. Rear Window: Another pairing of Jimmy Stewart and Alfred Hitchock, this time in a movie about the what-are-my neighbors-up-to paranoia that grips us all every now and then. Truly superb performances from Stewart and then-future Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly.

4. Cinderella Man: For the reasons I stated here.

5. Walk The Line: For the reasons I stated here.
