Its that time of year again, Apple is announcing new products, and this announcement makes clear that Apple is planning on converting the Ipod into a complete home entertainment system.
With the $349 iPod Hi-Fi system, users can dock their portable players into the speakers and use a remote control to operate it from afar. That means there’s no longer a need for a cabinet full of CDs, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said during a presentation at company headquarters.
“It’s home stereo reinvented for the iPod age,” he said.
The article doesn’t make all of the features of this system clear, but at first blush its unclear what differentiates this device from what’s available currently. For a fraction of the price of this new system, I can buy an Apple Universal Dock and audio and video patch cables and patch my Ipod into our television and stereo…….in fact, I plan on making this purchase soon…….so I’m not sure what the added benefit of the $ 349 system is.
And as Apple continues to expand Ipod nation, there’s a competitor in the forest:
Microsoft confirms that it is planning an “ultra-mobile PC device,” code-named Origami. The company plans to release information incrementally through the Web site http://www.origamiproject.com , with the next tidbit expected Thursday.
Many will deride any move Microsoft makes in this area, but I wouldn’t Alot of people have lost alot of money underestimating Bill Gates.
