Marion Barry Update

by @ 12:15 pm on March 9, 2006. Filed under General

Once again, I’m reminded of why, on some level, I like former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry; he’s just so darn entertaining.

D.C. Councilman and former mayor Marion Barry has been sentenced to three years probation for failing to file federal or local tax returns for years 1999 to 2004.

Barry has not been fined. He owes $195,000 in federal taxes and $54,000, plus penalties and interest, in District taxes.

Barry pleaded guilty last October under an agreement reached with federal prosecutors which required him to acknowledge his failure to file returns for the five-year period.

Barry has said he’s unsure how much money he earned during that time period. But he has not challenged claims by federal prosecutors that his income topped $534,000 during the five year period.

Considering his recent problems with drug tests, probation could be a problem for the former Mayor-for-life.

Of course, none of this stopped Marion from having a rockin’ 70th birthday party.
