With the Nationals Stadium deal apparently a done deal, and Cox Cable now reaching a deal to carry the Nationals’ games this season (although I still won’t be able to watch them on Comcast), the Washington Post has this to say about the upcoming season.
Opening Day is only weeks away, and for now Washington area baseball fans will be able, thanks to Mayor Anthony A. Williams, the council and Major League Baseball (yes, the word was “thanks”; it’s a time for being nice to everybody) to concentrate on the truly important questions, such as:
Is Ryan Zimmerman the next Brooks Robinson? Can Cristian Guzman hit his weight this season? He has lost a few pounds. Will Alfonso Soriano please be so kind as to play in the outfield for his $10 million salary? Is John Patterson the next Jim Palmer? Since when did a beer and a hot dog cost over 10 bucks?
Important questions indeed.
RFK Stadium after a baseball slumber of 33 seasons.
That long hiatus is in itself a rebuke to the game’s owners — in retrospect it’s hard to fathom how they could have shunned this vibrant market for so long. But as we said, it’s time now to be nice to everybody, time to buy tickets, check out schedules, pick up a baseball magazine or two — time to play ball.
Bring it on.
