Can Jack Bauer Trust Anyone ?

by @ 12:17 pm on March 21, 2006. Filed under General

When we last left Jack Bauer, he was holding a dying Tony Almeida in his arms. By the end of last night’s episode, Jack had yet another rug pulled out from under him when a source revealed the apparent involvement of Audrey Raines, a co-worker and a woman he had loved, and may still love, in a conspiracy whose goal remains a mystery. If true it wouldn’t be the first time that Jack was double-crossed. It happened in Season One with Nina Myers, and it apparently happened before Season One in the person of Christopher Henderson. Coming after everything else we’ve seen so far this season, though, one wonders how much more Jack can take.

There was another revealing event in this week’s episode. Intent on tracking down the “information broker” selling schematics, of what we still don’t know, to Bierko, Jack makes a deal with a German Intelligence officer that looks for all the world like treason. The German wants the NSA’s “wet list” of active terrorist investigations; something that would never be shared with even a friendly foreign government. Jack agrees to give it to him in exchange for him leading Jack to Collette, the broker. In the end, though, Jack double-crosses his German counterpart and preserves the secrecy of the list. What this proves is that Jack is, above all, a patriot. He did what he needed to do to get the information he needed, but he did it a way that protected his country. One would think that the Germans will not be happy about this, though. How might they get back at Jack ? Perhaps by telling our old friends in Beijing that, contrary to what they were told, he is not dead at all.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President continues to look for all the world like a power-hungry politco setting President Jellyfish up for a big fall. How that will come about, only time will tell.

Rick Moran has his usual summary up at Right Wing Nut House, as well as two (here and here) at Blogs4Bauer.

Well, we know now that Audrey’s not guilty and I think he can trust her…Chloe too, and Bill if he were there. Probably Curtis too, although Curtis usually follows orders. That’s about it.
