Virginia Blog Carnival XXXI

by @ 7:46 am on April 10, 2006.

Good morning and welcome to the 31st edition of the Virginia Blog Carnival, hosted for the first time here at the new home of Below The Beltway. The Carnival was born in September 2005, thanks largely to the inspiration of Chad Dotson at Commonwealth Conservative, who describes the idea behind the VBC in this post. Since then we’ve had 26 weeks of some great posts from bloggers all across Virginia. This is the third time I’ve hosted the VBC and, once again, we’ve had some great posts from all over the Commonwealth.

First, writing from Stafford County, Scott Hirons at Virginia Virtucon writes about possible new funding sources for Washington’s Metro system. And, no, its not just another fare increase.

Next, Roci at Rociante’s Burden writes about the discovery of yet another missing link.

From the world of science we move on to politics, where Lowell Feld at Raising Kaine writes about the latest developments from Harris Miller’s Senate campaign, and doesn’t seem very happy about it.

Writing from Bland County, Jerry Fuhrman of From on High, writes about the problems affecting that part of Virginia. Its not traffic, or immigration, or gas prices…….its coyotes.

Next Will Vehrs writes at Commonwealth Conservative writes about the latest first-step in his daughter’s life.

First step, first dance recital, first day of school, first sports team, first camp, first play, first prom, high school graduation, college graduation, marriage? they just keep coming, although they?re going to slow a bit for me now. I like to think I will be able to savor them more now, thanks to all the maturity I?ve collected getting two of them past the age of 21.

Just remember to keep blogging about it Will.

Next, NickFinity, writing at Jefferson Mammoth writes about a weekend spent visiting with a hero who also happens to his grandfather.

I have always looked up to my grandparents, but hearing what my grandad went through really cemented in me that he is a hero. Two years ago my wife and I took my parents and grandparents to see the WWII memorial in DC. He was thankful to see it. He said he did not expect anything and figured there would never be anything done for WWII veterans. It is really a shame it took so long and that so many who fought never had the opportunity to see it (including my other grandpa).

A shame indeed, but a fitting tribute nonetheless. Here’s to Nick’s Grandfather and all the other hero’s of World War II.

Next, Chris Green from Staunton writes at Spank That Donkey about the amount of pork that has found its way into the Katrina rebuilding efforts.

Next, Adam Gurri at Creative Destruction writes about the situational element of natural selection.

Writing from Slabtown, Virginia, Bill Emory writes about the memories left behind at a local estate sale.

Finally, from Norton, Carl Kilo about the changing face of his the neighborhood he grew up in.

And thus we reach the end of this week’s Virginia Blog Carnival. Once again, I’ve enjoyed hosting and reading the submissions from all over the Commonwealth. Next week’s VBC will be hosted at Virginia Virtucon
