Yes, even though it was warm and sunny outside, we spent at least part of the Memorial Day weekend inside watching movies, two to be precise.
First up was Cheaper by the Dozen 2, starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in a sequel to 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen
, a comedy about the Baker family and their twelve children. As in the first movie, this edition features alot of physical comedy, mostly at the expense of Steve Martin, and, of course, your standard Hollywood warm-fuzzy family message. While this is far from Steve Martin’s best work, it was an entertaining 90 minutes or so.
Next, we saw Seabiscuit, the true story of a race horse that captured the attention of America in the 1930s. Both Jeff Bridges and Tobey Maguire put forth excellent performances, and the narration by David McCullough gives the movie a Ken Burns/PBS documentary feel which just emphasizes the impact that this unexpected champion had on the country. I was unfamiliar with the story of Seabiscuit before this, and found myself rooting for him to win in his penultimate race against Triple Crown champion War Admiral as well as a final race that serves as the climax to the movie.
