It must be tough to be Joe Lieberman. You agree to be Al Gore’s Vice-Presidential running mate in 2000 and, when you run for President in 2004, he turns around and endorses Howard Dean. Now, Gore apparently doesn’t think his old running mate belongs in the Senate anymore:
Interviewed on Bloomberg TV, Al Gore refused to endorse his former vice presidential running mate, Sen. Joe Lieberman (C-CT), in his re-election race.
Said Gore: “I am not involved. I typically do not get involved in Democratic primaries. Joe is my close friend, Joe and Hadassah are close to Tipper and me and it would be very difficult for me to ever oppose him. But I don’t get involved in primaries typically. He’s a great guy and he’s right on a lot of other issues.”
In other words, a refusal to endorse. In some ways, that’s a bigger slap in the face than if Gore had just come out and said that Connecticut Democrats should vote for Lieberman’s opponent, Ned Lamont. I wonder if Joe is rethinking his endorsement of AlGore from 2000.
