Lieberman May Run As An Independent

Former Vice-Presidential nominee and Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman doesn’t have many friends in the Democratic Party these days. They don’t like the fact that he’s allied with social conservatives. They don’t like the fact that he supports the Iraq War and the War on Terror. Even his own former running mate won’t endorse him in his re-election bid. Now Lieberman appears to beginning to recognize that the knives in his back have Democratic fingerprints on them, he has announced that he may run as an Independent if he fails to get the Democratic nomination:

HARTFORD, Conn. — Facing a stronger-than-expected Democratic primary challenge and sagging poll numbers because of his support of the Iraq war, Sen. Joe Lieberman said Monday he’ll collect signatures to run as an unaffiliated candidate if he loses next month’s primary.

“While I believe that I will win the Aug. 8 primary, I know there are no guarantees in elections,” Lieberman told reporters on the steps of Connecticut’s statehouse. “No one really knows how many Democrats will come out to vote on what may be a hot day in August.”

Lieberman said he will still be running as a Democrat even if he’s not the party’s nominee and plans to remain part of the Democratic caucus in the Senate if re-elected.

“I want the opportunity to put my case before all the people of Connecticut in November,” Lieberman said.

And the people of Connecticut just may vote for him, they’ve elected Independents to the Senate before. Last time, it was a Lowell Weicker, who was an outcast among his fellow Republicans before leaving the reservation and becoming an Independent. For many, his support of the The similarities to Leiberman’s current sad situation are quite apparent.
