You’ve got to hand it to the House of Representatives. In an era where we’re fighting the War on Terror, a War in Iraq, and watching a new war unfold in Lebanon, they aren’t afraid to tackle the really important issues:
On Tuesday it took up the gay-marriage amendment. This was a meaningless exercise, except in terms of amassing political ammunition: The Senate had already defeated the amendment. Nonetheless, some members had no trouble explaining the value of the dead-end debate. “This is probably the best message we can give to the Middle East in regards to the trouble we are having over there right now,” said Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.).
How’s that again ? If we ban gay marriage Al Qaeda won’t try to kill us anymore and peace and justice will reign from the shores of Lebanon to the mountains of Afghanistan ? Yea, makes sense to me. The sad thing is that the guy probably believes the nonsense he spouts.
After the gay marriage amendment failed — thus subjecting us to more terror attacks under Representative Gringrey’s logic — the House turned its attention to more nonsense:
Fresh on the heels of not accomplishing that bit of the people’s business, the House then turned its attention to the Pledge of Allegiance — specifically to an odious measure that would strip federal courts of jurisdiction to hear challenges to the pledge.
No word from Rep. Gringrey on the connection between the Pledge of Allegience and the War on Terror.
And the House isn’t done yet, they have more planned:
The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act would require doctors who perform late-term abortions to tell their patients that fetuses feel pain. The Public Expression of Religion Act would shield local officials and governments from having to pay damages or attorneys’ fees in lawsuits opposing the display of religious symbols on public property
Of course, bills like this have nothing to do with governing the nation and everything to do with the Republicans in Congress pandering to the religious conservatives in the party. Last time I checked, though, they were not the majority in this country.
