It comes at least once a summer, the hottest week of the year. And it appears, this year, the time is now:
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for the Washington region, forecasting 100-degree temperatures tomorrow and Wednesday.
The scorching temperatures, combined with high humidity, will cause the heat index to rise to around 110 degrees both days during the afternoon hours.
“Now is the time to prepare for the heat wave,” the weather service warned today in a late-morning alert, adding that “the combination of heat and humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses and fatalities will be possible.”
Mornings won’t bring much relief, especially in downtown areas.
“Urban areas will experience the hottest condition,” the weather service reported. “The heat index in the downtown areas of Baltimore and Washington D.C. may not drop below 90 degrees early Wednesday or Thursday morning.”
Today’s forecast calls for a possible thunderstorm in some areas, with temperatures hitting 95 degrees.
To say that it’s miserable out there is putting it mildly.
