Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

The Political Consequences Of September 11th

by @ 7:57 pm on August 9, 2006.

In his petition for divorce from the Democratic Party, Brendan Loy pinpoints when his own disillusionment began:

[T]he Democratic Party and I have been drifting apart for some time now. I believe it began on a Tuesday morning in the fall of 2001; I can?t exactly remember the date, but let?s just say a certain catastrophic event happened which changed the world in the eyes of most people ? but not of many liberals and Democrats. Oh, they were sad and mad, just like everybody else. But as the weeks and months wore on, I learned to my dismay that the far left didn?t see 9/11 as a world-changing event or a paradigm shift, but rather, just a minor historical blip that didn?t require any adjustments whatsoever to their worldview or their policy ideas.

Brendan is certainly correct in this observation. Even after 2,996 people were murdered and Osama bin Laden has threatened to destroy America unless we repent of our sins and convert to Islam, there are still those out there who don’t see the problem we face for what it is. You know their names. Michael Moore. Nancy Pelosi. And, now, Ned Lamont. And there is apparently a population out there who believes in these people.

The question that Brandon’s post raises in my mind, though, is whether we are seeing the signs of a political realignment that may take several election cycles to play itself out. Will the American political world divide itself between those who take the War on Islamic Radicalism seriously, and those who do not ? I don’t know the answer to that question, but I think it’s clear that the Democratic Party is taking a huge risk if it allows itself to be taken over by the anti-war crowd.

And, as an aside, I’ve added Brendan’s blog to my blogrolll. I’ve been reading him through Bloglines for sometime now, and you should to.
