The Worst President In American History

by @ 11:46 pm on August 16, 2006.

His name is James Earl Carter. He used to be a peanut farmer. Now, he’s an apologist for terrorist murderers. The evidence comes from an interview with the German newspaper Der Spiegal:

SPIEGEL: But wasn’t Israel the first to get attacked?

Carter: I don’t think that Israel has any legal or moral justification for their massive bombing of the entire nation of Lebanon. What happened is that Israel is holding almost 10,000 prisoners, so when the militants in Lebanon or in Gaza take one or two soldiers, Israel looks upon this as a justification for an attack on the civilian population of Lebanon and Gaza. I do not think that’s justified, no.

Excuse me, Mr. President, but what about the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers ? The indiscriminate bombing of Israeli cities ? What about the fact that Hezbollah choose to hide its soldiers and weapons among Lebanese civilians ? Does it matter to you that the prisoners Israel is holding are involved in terrorist actitivites against innocent civilians ? Apparently not. Then again, given your tenure from January 20, 1977 to that glorious day in 1980 when you were put on a plane back to Georgia, I can’t say I’m surprised by what you’re saying now.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s what the peanut farmer has to say about what happened in America after 9/11:

Unfortunately, after Sept., there was an outburst in America of intense suffering and patriotism, and the Bush administration was very shrewd and effective in painting anyone who disagreed with the policies as unpatriotic or even traitorous. For three years, I’d say, the major news media in our country were complicit in this subservience to the Bush administration out of fear that they would be accused of being disloyal. I think in the last six months or so some of the media have now begun to be critical. But it’s a long time coming.

You bet there was an intense outburst. Just like there was intense outburst after November 4, 1979. The difference was that, in 2001, we were led by a President who, for all his faults, had the guts to do what was right and stood up to the terrorists. I think it had a better result than your strategy of sitting in frong of a roaring fire wearing a sweater.

And to show that this man is so far beyond redemption, he sends wishes of good health to a murdering dictator:

SPIEGEL: You’ve written about your meeting with Fidel Castro. He appears seriously ill now and Cuban exiles are partying already in the streets of Miami. You are probably not in the mood to join them.

Carter: No, that’s true. Just because someone is ill I don’t think there should be a celebration of potential death. And my own belief is that Fidel Castro will recover. He is two years younger than I am, so he’s not beyond hope.

I will admit that there was a time I was willing to give Jimmy Carter the benefit of the doubt. He was, without question, a horrible President, but his post-Presidency was, for some short period of time, respectible. Habitat For Humanity does good work. And even some of the international election monitoring he’s been involved in has been, on the whole, a good thing.

But those times are gone.

This man is so obviously far gone it almost requires a new definition of “gone” to describe him. He defends the murderers of Hezbollah. He’s apparently friends with Fidel Castro. And, he presided over the greatest foreign policy defeat in American history.

Forget Nixon. Forget Grant. Forget Warren G. Harding.

The worst President in American history ? His name is James Earl Carter.

Carter goes 5 notched above Reagan (the President who governed like… well how can you can compare him to anyone when he disenfranchised Veterans and Minorities to give his billionare buddies tax cuts), so you get to pick where to put him…

  2. Someone with a Brain Says:

You should do a little research before condemning people with a little bit of empathy. He is far from the worst president in history. As poll results show its a neck and neck between Hoover and Bush Jr. But then again you probably believe everything on FOX news anyways so theres not much reason to try to discuss this with you.

Ignorance is bliss.. you must be one happy guy.

  3. Jonathan Strong Says:

You’re evaluation of Carter is dead on. His presidency was nothing short of an absolute disaster. Why else would there have been a misery index? An admitted national malaise? An expansion of Soviet influence in Asia, the Carribean, Africa, and South America?
The electorate handed Carter one of the biggest defeats in American history for numerous reasons.

  4. Doug Mataconis Says:

    James,

Yes, why don’t we compare Carter to Reagan.

Carter…..double digit inflation, high interest rates, and high unemployment.

Reagan……the longest peacetime economic expansion in American history.

Carter……Soviet expansion in Afghanistan and Central America.

Reagan…..presided over the defeat of the Soviet Union in the Cold War.

Carter……failed to stand up to a bunch of students who held American citizens hostage for 444 days.

Reagan……bombed Libya in retaliation for a terrorist bombing at a West Berlin disco, captured the men responsible for murdering Leon Klinghoffer on the Achille Lauro.

Carter….consulted his daughter Amy for advice on nuclear proliferation.

Reagan…..took foreign policy advice from people over the age of 12 who had actual experience in foreign policy.

  5. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Someone,

Poll results do not a bad President define. Results are what matter. And the four years that James Earl Carter sat in the White House are among the worst America has experienced since the end of World War Two.

  6. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Jonathan,

Remember when he told everyone to wear a sweater and turn down the thermostat in response to high oil prices ?

  7. D'Pooba Says:

    Hey!
Wait a minute!! Wait a minute!!
There’s a heck of a lot more to Jimmy than meets the eye ya know! Why if it weren’t for him Ronny Reagan would have gone down in the history books as just an average, ordinary Republican who “Won” the Cold War. And Richard Nixon and Jerry Ford wouldn’t look so hot either. And the Bushes, they’d just be hoo-hum Texican’s who liked to play in sand boxes. And what about Hoover, yeah, he’d still be listed as the worst! So Jimmy has to go down as the greatest presidential history re-writer of all times. And THAT AIN’T something ya’ sneeze at neither! And he didn’t just save the skin of the Re-pub’s neither! Why can you imagine what folks would have thought of Bill & Hillary (”The Dynamic Two-fer-One Duo”) if it hadn’t been fer the Man from Plains? They would’a had to leave da country and move to New York or Paris…… what? Excuse me fer a second folks. ….really? …she did? …yer puttin’ me on… they didn’t… and Monica?… NO!… how much does he get for a single speech?… NO WAY!!! …what? Oh! Yeah!… Sorry folks, got distracted there fer a second. Back to “The Dynamic Duo”, if it hadn’t been fer Jimmy they’d a have ta have moved ta Paris. In France! Now, how many “Worst Presidents” do you know that could’a done all that?

  8. Jersey McJones Says:

    Reagan: Narced to the HUAC.

Carter: A good and decent man.

Reagan was a scumbag of the lowest order.

Carter’s only, albeit big, mistake was that he was an outsider who tried to pull a Mr Smith on Washington and was rewarded with one of the weakest presidencies in American history.

Reagan simply negotiated for everything he wanted by giving the Democrats everything they wanted and by 1987 the S&Ls and Prudential crashed to the tune of 1.2 trillion taxpayor dollars, the housing market crashed and took 6 years to rebound, the deficit went through the roof, SS was looted and the IOUs in place will cost hundreds of percent more than the money was worth, nuns were murdered by his contra thugs, and on and on. He then deregulated the airline industry and so we can thank him wholeheartedly for 9/11. Oh yeah, then he regressed the tax code and so now we have the exact same disparity of wealth we had in 19-fuckin’-29.

Anyone who thinks Reagan was a great president is a moron.

  9. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Jersey McJones,

Carter’s mistake was that he was a small-time small state Governor who thought he was competent enough to run the United States of America.

He was so obviously wrong in that belief that it takes denial of the highest order to fail to see it.

  10. Dave Says:

I missed the hostage crisis, but what was Jimmy supposed to do about it? You barge into Iran and they likely end up dead.

And it didn’t really help that you had Reagan and Co. negotiating with the terrorists. Which, I might add, would probably go against what the current administration agrees with.

And I was raised by hard-core conservatives. The bad news is, they’ll probably be voting the same way I do in November.

  11. Puppeteer_23 Says:

Bush’s mistake was that he was an incompetent state Governor and failed businessman who thought he was competent enough to run the United States of America.

    There. Fixed that for you.

  12. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Dave,

Umm, tell the mullahs, who didn’t have the power to resist in 1980 by the way, that the bombing will start in 48 hours if the hostages aren’t released.

  13. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Puppeteer,

In case you missed it, this post is about Jimmy Carter, not George Bush. You really haven’t asked me my opinion about him, now have you ?

  14. C. J. Sonnefield Says:

Funny how you didn’t mention these facts: Reagan did NOTHING after terrorists killed over 17 Americans in the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon in 1983, he did NOTHING after terrorists killed 200 U.S. Marines in another bombing in Lebanon later that year, he did NOTHING after the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait was bombed by terrorists that same year, and he did NOTHING when the U.S Embassy Annex in Lebanon was bombed by terrorists in 1984, killing over 20 people.

Hezbollah was suspected in 3 of these attacks, but Reagan’s response was merely to have CIA investigate them.

There were 6 terrorist attacks against Americans during Reagan’s first term in office, and only 1 during Carter’s term.

Yes, Carter’s attempt to rescue the hostages in 1980 failed, but, unlike Bush, he had the sense not to declare war on a country that had nothing to do with the situation.

We have Reagan to thank for the current situation in Iraq–he’s the guy who funded and armed Saddam Hussein and his corrupt regime during the 1980’s.

    Is This My America?

This topic will draw controversy however, there can be no doubt of the truth when the truth is revealed. Time and time again I have weighed the Muslim frustration with Israel (of which there is a lot). I have tried very hard to see both sides of this c…
