Ohio State 28 Penn State 6

We got back from our whirlwind tour of Ohio early yesterday evening and, while it was tiring in many ways, it we had a great time visiting with family and friends. The highlight, of course, was watching the Ohio State Buckeyes beat Penn State.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — In about the time it took 79-year-old Joe Paterno to jog to the locker room, Troy Smith and No. 1 Ohio State’s defense turned a close game into a rout.

Smith threw an acrobatic 37-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter, then Malcolm Jenkins and Antonio Smith returned interceptions for touchdowns as the Buckeyes beat No. 24 Penn State 28-6 on Saturday.

“In the Big Ten, it’s always a four-quarter game,” Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. “We won a four-quarter game.”

Paterno, the Nittany Lions’ coach for the last 41 years, ambled to the locker room midway through the second quarter and didn’t return until the start of the fourth because he was suffering from the flu.

He got back just in time to see Smith turn a possible sack into a critical score as the Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) expanded a 7-3 lead on Brian Robiskie’s 37-yard touchdown catch.

For the first half of the game saw the Ohio State defense hold the Nittany Lions to three points, and that only came on a field goal at the end of the second quarter. For most of the game, the Lions were caught in a 3 downs and out trap that they couldn’t seem to get out of. The Buckeye offense, meanwhile, didn’t really come to life until the second half when two touchdowns but Ohio State on top. The Lions threatened one last time, getting the ball on the 1 yard line, but were forced to walk away with a field goal. Then, any hope of a Penn State comeback was put to rest by two consecutive defensive interceptions that were run in for touchdowns.

All in all, a great game and a great tme with the crowd at Ohio Stadium. Incidentally, the Buckeyes are now 3-0 in games I’ve seen in person.
