What I’m Watching

by @ 10:55 pm on November 9, 2006.

I don’t talk much about television here, but there are two shows I’m watching this fall that deserve comment.

The first is one that I’m convinced, were it on a broadcast network or HBO, would be considered one of the best-damn-shows-on-television. I’m talking about SciFi’s Battlestar Galactica. This isn’t the cheesy 70’s show you might remember, it’s a gritty, sometimes dark, and far better casted story. And, its the brain child of Ronald D. Moore, who was part of the best days of the 1990s reincarnation of the Star Trek universe. The third season debuted at the beginning of October, and its unquestionably the best yet.

The second is a new show that debuted on CBS in September called Jericho which started off with a premise I just couldn’t resist — a nuclear attack of unknown origin on at least a dozen American cities as seen through the eyes of the residents of a small town in Kansas. After a few weeks of a slow-start, the series has started to take an interesting turn that raises alot of questions about just what the citizens of Jericho, Kansas are dealing with.

All of this, of course, is just marking time for Season Six of 24.

If Exodus Parts 1 and 2 don’t win some kind of award then nobody’s watching the show. The first four episodes of BSG Season 3 would have been better as a major motion picture than the vast majority of the crap in theaters this year. My only complaint was what the point of the Starbuck subplot was. Maybe all will be revealed.

Battlestar Galactica is almost in a class of it’s own - it is at least as good as the best of HBO, but because it is Sci Fi and based on a very cheesy original show one has to enage in a remarkable amount of explaining and persuading to get people to watch and overcome some (partly well founded) prejuidices.

    Johan,

Exactly. There was a rumor earlier this season that NBC/Univeresal was considering moving BSG from SciFi to primetime on NBC. Apparently, that won’t happen. Too bad, I think the wider exposure would’ve been great
