Bill Frist Won’t Run In 2008

by @ 12:15 pm on November 29, 2006.

Given the lackluster performance of the GOP Senate class in the November elections, this isn’t entirely surprising, but Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has announced he will not run for President in 2008:

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) will not run for president in 2008, according to sources close to the politician.

Frist will put out a statement at 1 p.m. ET today confirming his decision, according to the source. His decision was first reported in Hotline’s On Call blog. He will not immediately endorse any of the other candidates pursuing the race, the source said.

Given his performance as majority leader, I can’t see how he would’ve made a good President anyway:

Frist’s tenure as majority leader was a rocky one. He was widely criticized for his prominent role in the Terri Schiavo case and seemed to struggle to reconcile his duties in the Senate with his role as leader of his party. In March he delivered a flat speech at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference that had pundits wondering if he could ever make the starting gate of a presidential race.

Not big loss in the long run.
