Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

America’s Newest Space Port

by @ 3:24 pm on December 16, 2006.

It’s located on Wallops Island, Virginia:

WALLOPS ISLAND — In a flash of flame and smoke, an Air Force Minotaur I rocket thundered into space before sunrise here today.

As it soared out over the Atlantic Ocean it trailed thick smoke that glowed blue, yellow and pink against the rising sun.

There did not appear to be any problems with the launch.

The separation of the first stage of the refurbished Minuteman II fell away from the rocket a few seconds after launch, glowing as it fell earthward into the ocean.

The 69-foot-tall rocket carried aloft two small satellites that could change the way the military and NASA do things in space, and also propelled Virginia a step closer to the commercial space business.

Cool.

I’ve actually been to Wallops Island for a week. The most vidid memory was that when we landed we found out the control tower is empty, the fire department turns on the runway lights and uses a walkie-talkie to communicate with the pilot!

The second memory is that it’s an entomology (sp?) preserve, you can be ticketed for having a bug zapper!
