Bush’s New Iraq Policy

by @ 6:04 pm on January 4, 2007. Filed under Iraq

At this point it seems certain that President Bush will announce an increase in the number of troops in Iraq — the so-called “surge” idea — and send as many as 30,000 more troops to Iraq.

The problem is even the Bush Administration apparently doesn’t think it will work.NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reported the following last night on NBC Nightly News:

Administration officials told us today that President Bush has now all but decided to surge those additional troops into Baghdad to try to control over the violence there and only then could they accelerate the turnover of territory to Iraqi security forces. Fact is they?re not up to the task yet. The plan would also throw more U.S. money at Iraq for reconstruction and a jobs program. Interestingly enough, one administration official admitted to us today that this surge option is more of a political decision than a military one because the American people have run out of patience and President Bush is running out of time to achieve some kind of success in Iraq.

In other words, we really don’t know if this will work, but they want us to try something so we’ll give it a shot.

This is exactly the type of scatter-brained approach to military strategy that has gotten us in this mess to begin with. Clearly, the Bush Administration has no idea what it’s doing.
