Quite Possibly My New Favorite Drink

by @ 12:13 am on January 5, 2007.

I wasn’t really a fan of Gin until Kellie clued me into the luxury that is the Tanqueray & Tonic. Since then, I’ve tried other Gin varities, including Bombay Sapphire and Beefeaters, and, with the single exception of Tanqueray 10, none of them can compare to the original.

That is until, perhaps, now.

Starting this year, Tanqueray is introducing a new Gin blend called Tanquerey Rangpur, which alters the traditional blend by introducing Rangpur Limes and a few other varietals. Today, I was able to have my first taste and I was, quite honestly, impressed.

There’s a reason why Gin is usually mixed with another liquid (i.e., tonic or vermouth) rather than being served straight up. Depending on the variety, straight Gin is pretty much an acquired taste. Tanqueray’s original blend, on the rocks, is an acquired taste. It has a strong bite that most people probably wouldn’t like.

Tanqueray Rangpur, though, is quite different. It doesn’t have the bite and the citrus taste from the Rangpur Limes gives it a great taste that is nothing like the “mouthwash” effect that some people associate with Gin. It also feels lighter than regular Gin, although it does have have much as alcohol content as traditional Gin.

I tried Rangpur straight on the rocks and it was almost like drinking a Gin & Tonic with a twist of lime, which is exactly the way I like it.
