That Other Ohio Team

The Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t the only Ohio team playing in a bowl game this weekend, but you wouldn’t know it:

ATHENS, Ohio ? The Bobcats have waited 38 years for this, but now, as their moment arrives, the shadow of the state?s biggest school is stretching to this southeastern Ohio campus.

In Mobile, Ala., on Sunday, the Ohio University football team will make its first bowl appearance in nearly four decades.

When asked how they feel about the game, though, many OU students respond with a question of their own: Which one?

With Ohio State competing for the national title Monday against the University of Florida, OU?s appearance the previous night in the little-known GMAC Bowl against Southern Mississippi has become something of a happy-hour appetizer to the state?s main course.

“I?ll definitely watch it; I?m excited because I know the guys,” said freshman Marc Krauss. “But the fact that Ohio State plays the next day for the nation al championship overshadows it.”

Yeah, I would think so.

  1. Sorry, it’s not being “overshadowed” by OSU in the MNC game. The Ohio/Southern Miss game isn’t big news no matter where or when OSU is playing.

And why no similar story for Cincinnati, another Ohio school who played in their bowl game yesterday (beating Western Michigan)? That game had a record as well, where Cincinnati’s coach became the first coach ever to defeat the same team twice in the same season while coaching two different teams.
