Yet More Evidence That All Is Well In Virginia

by @ 11:46 pm on January 16, 2007.

Crime ? Not a problem. Transportation issues ? Solved. The budget ? Balanced from now until infinity.

I’m sure that’s true. After all, why else would our friends in Richmond have time to deal with nonsense like this:

Littering on highways; community service; penalty. Requires any person convicted of littering on any highway to perform a mandatory minimum of 30 hours of community service, administered by the local law-enforcement agency, picking up litter/trash while wearing a blaze orange vest with the phrase “I AM A LITTERBUG.” Unsuccessful completion shall result in a misdemeanor conviction of up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine of $2,500.

What’s that you say ? There’s still crime ? The roads are still crowded ? We haven’t balanced the budget yet ?

Surely, you jest.

I see litter in my town as a problem - I think it breeds a certain attitude. I think that when people dump beer bottles, cigarette butts, candy wrappers and worse out of their cars and onto the street, into the trees it’s depressing. Also, who can citizens have pride in and care about a town where some of its own people treat it like a trash can?

I’m actually going to start posting photos of the crud laying all over the place in this town and posting them on my blog.

It really makes me angry when somebody driving in front of me flicks a cigarette butt out of their window.

I wish they would prosecute these people more often. I wish they would make them clean up trash and put their fines towards city beautification and clean up efforts. I think the orange jumpsuits meant to embarass are stupid and uncalled for.

There are always worse things going on, but one of the first steps to a healthy community is a clean and cared for community.

You can’t make people care about their community, but IF you were a litterbug, don’t you think you might think twice before tossing trash onto the ground if you’d just spent a couple of weekends cleaning UP litter?
