Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Fred Thompson On The Issues

I continue to blog about the Fred Thompson boomlet only because I find it fascinating. If he runs, I sense that he has the potential to blow more than one, if not all, of the current Republican frontrunners out of the water. He’s completely at home in front of a camera in a way that no other candidate can claim to be, and he’s closer to the Republican base than any of the other candidates.

Here’s an excerpt from an interview on Fox News Sunday:

And a summary from GOPProgress.com:

Gay rights: Tolerance for everyone, but no “special rights” for gays; personally opposed to gay marriage and civil unions; give “great leeway” to states on the issue; not courts but people must decide.

Campaign finance: “I came from outside to Congress”; highly critical of soft money; “reasonable limitations”; claims Goldwater on his side

Immigration: “Enforcement at the border has to be primary”; those immigrants already here warrant special consideration; “no amnesty, nothing blanket like that”

Gun control: “Generally” against gun control; Constitution means what it says

I can’t say that I agree with Fred Thompson on much of anything, and I’m not sure I’d vote for him if the opportunity arose, but he strikes me as a stalking horse who could have a profound impact on the race for the GOP nomination, and, as a political junkie, that fascinates me.

This crap just doesn’t cut it for me. Round ‘em up and ship ‘em out!

Furthermore, what is “generally against gun control”? I need a candidate who understands that the ONLY valuable meaning of the term “gun control” is a tight shot group.
