Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

How Rutgers Saved A Season

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under College Sports, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Sports

When the basketball season started out, it didn’t look like we’d be seeing much good out of the Rutgers’ Women’s Team. They played poorly at the start of the season and lost more than a few games that they should have won. Now, after beating one of the best teams in the country, they’re one [...]

A President Alone

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under Bush Administration, Politics

Robert Novak writes in today’s Washington Post that the Bush Administration, and President Bush in particular, is increasingly isolated from Republicans in Congress:
With nearly two years remaining in his presidency, George W. Bush is alone. In half a century, I have not seen a president so isolated from his own party in Congress — [...]

Go Buckeyes ! Beat Hoyas !

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Final Four, College Sports, Ohio State Buckeyes, Sports

The Georgetown Hoyas beat North Carolina last night to make in into the Final Four and a matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Here’s hoping Ohio State pulls it off, because, if they do, a mind-blowing matchup could be in the cards:
We sit here today on the brink of a potentially epic Final Four. We’ve [...]

Who The Insiders Fear

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under 2008 Election, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Politics, Rudy Giuliani

The National Journal polled Democratic and Republican insiders back in December and again more recently asking each group which of the other party’s candidates for President they feared the most. The results are quite interesting.
First the Republicans the Democrats fear:
Rudy Giuliani: 39% (12%)
Mitt Romney: 20% (11%)
John McCain: 17% (73%)
Chuck Hagel: 9% (0%)
Fred Thompson: 9% (0%)
Mike [...]

The Decline (And Eventual Fall) Of The Album

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under Music, Technology, iTunes

As I’ve chronicled many times on this blog, the music industry is undergoing significant change. Consumers are buying fewer CD’s and more digital songs, and one of the results of that decision is manifesting itself in the end of the album:
LOS ANGELES, March 25 ? Now that the three young women in Candy Hill, a [...]

Kelo Comes To Washington

by @ Monday, March 26th, 2007. Filed under Individual Liberty, Property Rights, Washington DC

It seems the District of Columbia is on the verge of taking over a locksmith shop to make way for a massive new hotel:
District officials are proceeding with their plan to acquire a locksmith shop at the corner of Ninth and L streets NW to make way for a convention center hotel, according to D.C. [...]

Fred Thompson Gets A Key Endorsement

by @ Sunday, March 25th, 2007. Filed under 2008 Election, Fred Thompson, Politics

From his wife:
Close friends of Fred Thompson say his wife Jeri is urging him to take the plunge later this year and run for the Republican presidential nomination.
The former senator from Tennessee and current actor on “Law & Order,” in private conversation, makes it clear that he is seriously interested in launching a candidacy that [...]

The Washington Post: Ignoring The Constitution Again

by @ Sunday, March 25th, 2007. Filed under D.C. Vote Initiative, U.S. Constitution, Washington DC

The Washington Post had another typically apoplectic editorial on the D.C. vote bill yesterday, but this part in particular struck me as exceedingly outrageous:
It’s also evident from this week’s debate that constitutional questions are not an issue for Congress to decide, but for the courts.
Think about what that really means. Basically, the Post is saying [...]

Is John McCain In Trouble ?

by @ Sunday, March 25th, 2007. Filed under 2008 Election, John McCain, Politics

Oh dear God, I hope so:
GRAFTON CO., NH — Sen. John McCain said his presidential campaign would not meet its fundraising goals this quarter, and his campaign advisers acknowledged that ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney may wind up raising more.
“We’re going to pay a price for it because we got a late start,” McCain told reporters [...]

Buckeyes Advance To Final Four

by @ Sunday, March 25th, 2007. Filed under 2007 Final Four, College Sports, Ohio State Buckeyes, Sports

Last night, the Buckeyes blew past Memphis to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 1999:
SAN ANTONIO, March 24 ? Back when Mike Conley Jr. and Greg Oden were precocious high school teammates dominating the A.A.U. circuit, they were advertised as the ultimate package deal.
Coaches in gyms from Hackensack, N.J., to Las [...]
