Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Don Imus Off The Air, Cho Seung Hui On The Nightly News

by @ 10:49 am on April 19, 2007.

Of all the condemnation that has been heaped on NBC in the past twelve hours for airing extensive excerpts from the video they received from the Virginia Tech killer, this one is the best:

Let’s see. Don Imus calls some young women “nappy headed hos” and we’re all supposed be to shocked, shocked I tell you. Cho blows away 32 human lives and not only do we hear no condemnation of the vile person from the big media, but NBC is going to oblige the piece of human debris by airing his “manifesto.” Democrat presidential contenders refuse to appear on a Fox Network debate, citing bias, but I guess it’s okay for NBC is going to realize Cho’s dreams of celebrity status at the expense of 32 lives.

Cho may have been a deranged psycho, but he was sharp as a scalpel when it came to playing NBC News for his personal patsy. Anything for a point in the ratings. I’m sure the families of the deceased will appreciate the Cho Show as much as they appreciate Capus’s inevitable defense of freedom of speech and the public’s right to know. Though I don’t NBC will delete any of Cho’s possible references to “nappy headed hos.”

NBC continues to defend itself, and of course they had the right to air the video if they received it. The question is whether it was right for them to do it. What possible good could come from letting America watch the rantings of a madman on a video made only hours before he murdered 30 people ?

Frankly, I don’t see it.

In other news, parents of some of the victims canceled an appearance on the Today Show this morning after NBC aired the video:

Relatives of victims of Virginia Tech shooter Cho Seung-Hui canceled appearances on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday, to protest the network’s decision to air Cho’s video and pictures.

Host Meredith Vieira said the family members were “very upset” with NBC. Host Matt Lauer says there were “big differences of opinion” within NBC about whether any of the material should be aired. But he says the network decided to show some of the material, in hopes it will help people understand why the tragedy happened.

What ? The tragedy happened because a murdering scumbag choose to kill 32 people. He was clearly mentally ill but he also clearly knew what he was doing. He’s dead now, thankfully, so we don’t have to go through the motions of a trial. We don’t need to give a platform to him from beyond the grave.

James Joyner has a different view and Brendan Loy and Michelle Malkin are also blogging about this.

That is the great liberal fallacy; believing everything has a logical reasoning. But there is simply nothing logical about evil, and because of this, many of them will never accept it and see evil as though it were religion, which many of them also dismiss. So because they ignore evil, then there must be a logical reasoning for events such as this.

But make no mistake, there is no logical reasoning here. Cho was clearly angry and expressed that anger in its purest form.

You are very right here Doug. There was no point in showing this video. Instead, it should have simply been put back in an envelope and sent directly to the FBI as evidence. NBC gave Cho exactly what he wanted: exposure.

I think RUSH gave a very plausible reason today!

Lets face it imus was fired because al sharpton played the big race card on that situation. Why nbc would show the video of this sicken person really shows there integrity on the whole thing.Remember howard stern worked for nbc and they allowed worse things then imus said.Who ever did allow the video out should also be fired from there jobs.Maybe if we send enough emails to nbc asking for those reponsibe be accountable for there actions now.
