A-Rod Up, Yankees Down

by @ 7:49 am on April 24, 2007.

Alex Rodriguez is having a great April, unfortunately the same can’t be said for the Yankees:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 23 ? Alex Rodriguez smashed two more home runs on Monday and already has 14 this season. No player in baseball history has hit so many in the first 18 games. No player has ever hit more in April. Rodriguez is batting .400, about as hot as a hitter can be, yet the Yankees are reeling.

They lost for the fourth game in a row Monday, 10-8 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field, because their starter had another dismal outing. Kei Igawa lasted just four and a third innings, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.

The Yankees? starters have failed to last five innings in half of their games. The rotation is averaging the fewest innings per start of any staff in the majors. The bullpen is exhausted, and the offense cannot keep up.

Yes, it’s early and things can turn around on a dime. But this isn’t a good start.

And the Orioles are in second, looking pretty good so far.

And yes, I will enjoy this, because I do not expect to be celebrating by the time the All-Star Break comes around.
