I don’t know whether it’s a sign that things are turning around (finally) or not, but the Yankees won both games of a doubleheader against Texas yesterday:
ARLINGTON, Tex., May 3 - The Yankees have won their last 10 games here, including two more in a doubleheader sweep of the Texas Rangers on Thursday. They won a day game, 4-3, and a night game, 5-2, and probably did not want to leave.
It was not a smooth series for the Yankees, who lost starter Phil Hughes to a hamstring injury on Tuesday, fired their rookie strength coach on Wednesday and endured a rainout that will force them to call up yet another starter from the minors. But they survived to sweep the three-game series, nudging their record closer to .500, at 12-14.
“We needed that one bad,” said Doug Mientkiewicz, who hit a two-run homer Thursday night. “It’s nice, after what we went through before we got here, to come in and win all three.
“We had a little extra attitude this week here, which was nice to see and good to be a part of. It’s not like we were freaking out, but we were like, ?Let’s put our foot on the gas a little bit,’ and it showed.”
The Yankees’ beleaguered pitching staff led the way. The pitchers allowed only six runs and 18 hits over the three games, with Mariano Rivera saving both games on Thursday. It is easier to feel better when the pitching is settled.
“That’s what pitching does,” Rivera said. “You pitch good, you give a chance for your team to score some runs. That’s exactly what we did. We were always trying; it’s not like we weren’t trying before. But when you win, it’s a different feel, definitely.”
Umm, yea I’d say that’s right.
