David Wells On Respecting Your Teammates

by @ 1:21 pm on May 8, 2007.

Former Yankee David Wells doesn’t think much of the generous travel schedule the Yankees are giving Roger Clemens:

According to his contract, Clemens will not be forced to travel with the team when he isn’t scheduled to pitch. He had the same deal with the Houston Astros. David Wells, a Yankees teammate of Clemens’ in 2002 and 2003, doesn’t agree with that.

“I don’t think I would ever do it because of the fact I personally think it would disrespect the team and your teammates,” Wells said, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “You look at the other players. How are they going to respect you? What are they going to think if you’re not there pulling for the team?”

I was going to write something myself about Wells’ quote, but discovered that Peter Abraham did it for me:

Obviously being out of shape and drunk four days a week is a much better way to respect the team. Being so out of shape that you can?t pitch in the World Series, that also is a true tribute to teamwork.

Clearly we should all follow the lead set by Wells. I mean who is this Clemens character think he is? All he does is work out like an Army Ranger six days a week and throw 93-mph fastballs at the age of 44. What a clown.

Ouch.
