Entertainment Weekly countsdown it’s version of the Top 25 science fiction movies and televisions shows of all time.
Here are my own comments on a few picks:
- # 25: V: The Miniseries What else can you ask for ? Earth in crisis. Alien lizards. Even hyrbrids. Quite honestly, one of my favorites as a kid.
- # 23 Doctor Who Yea, it’s quirky and, especially in it’s early years it’s incredibly British, and the special effects were, well, not all that special. But that’s part of the charm of this show. As an American who grew up on the PBS rebroadcasts of this PBS show, I’ll always be a fan of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
- # 8 Star Trek: The Next Generation It may be sacrilegious to some, but I think it’s obvious that TNG is far superior to the original Star Trek in almost every respect. Not every script was perfect, but there isn’t a single episode of the original series that can surpass The Best Of Both Worlds Part I or Part II, or my personal favorite The Inner Light
- # 5 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: What else can you say except Khan !!!. This was the movie that revived the Star Trek franchise after a disasterous entry into the movie realm. More importantly, it was an incredibly inventive play off an episode of the original series.
- # 2 Battlestar Galactica: As I’ve said before, this isn’t your father’s Battlestar Galactica. Heck, there are times I’m not even sure who the bad guys are. And that’s what makes the show so much fun.
All of them worth watching.

Agreed, there are some goodies on there. I do have some quibbles…
#19. Starship Troopers?!? I mean, it was a fun ride and the effects were okay, but a landmark of SF it most certainly was not. It also was a literary molestation of Heinlein’s work.
#14. Children of Men - I fully admit I haven’t seen this. It seems like such an odd one to include. Especially when I haven’t heard any of my fellow SF fans praising it. It just seems like such an outlier.
The good news is that I’m definitely adding Lost and Company of Men to my Netflix queue. As far as lists go, this one wasn’t too bad.
