The End Of The Apprentice

by @ 8:59 am on May 19, 2007.

NBC says they fired him. Donald Trump says he quit. Whatever the case, The Apprentice is finally, mercifully, history:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Donald Trump, whose low-rated reality show “The Apprentice” was left off the new prime-time schedule unveiled this week by NBC, says the network can’t fire him — he quits.

The real estate mogul issued a statement on Friday saying he has informed the U.S. television network he is “moving on from ‘The Apprentice’ to a major new TV venture,” though he declined to elaborate.

There was no immediate comment from NBC.

But his announcement appeared to end any lingering doubt that “The Apprentice,” which turned the self-styled tycoon into a television star and popularized the catch phrase, “You’re fired,” would be banished from NBC’s airwaves next season.

And it probably should’ve happened a year or two ago. The first season of the show was interesting, but it became pretty clear later on that it iwas little more than a PR tool for Donald Trump, Inc. What was amusing in the beginning became annoying as time wore on, and Trump’s pornographic display of ostentatousness, as if the acquisition of things is all that matters in life, really started to sicken me after awhile.

The manufactured, edited version of Trump from season one was the stength of the show. The real Trump that we’ve been subjected to over the past year plus was the show’s downfall. I guess Vince McMahon really won the Battle of the Billionaires after all.
