Prior to Monday night’s Season 6 finale, there were rumors on the Internet, repeated on TV Guide’s website that there would be a surprise ending that included the return of a character thought to be dead. Of course, this didn’t happen and TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello explains why:
Question: Hey, what’s the deal with no “long dead” character returning “with a vengeance” in 24’s finale, as reported earlier in TV Guide? I was all wound up to have Tony Almeida back, and no such person showed up!- Tom
Ausiello: OK, here’s the straight scoop: I know for a fact that producers very briefly considered bringing Tony back from the dead in the finale’s closing moments. Ultimately, however, they decided that such a twist would violate the premise of the series. And as cool as it would’ve been to have Tony back, I believe they made the right decision.
As cool as it might have been to have Tony back, I’m glad they decided not to do it. The hopes of many fans notwithstanding, it was pretty obvious that Tony was intended to be dead in Season 5, bringing the character back now, and in such a surprising manner, would certainly have stirred up interest in the show but it would have been much too reminicient of things like Dallas’s Bobby Ewing debacle.
There’s no question that 24 is in need of a reset in Season Seven but the writers didn’t need to violate the laws of logic to make that happen.
