Jan Grzebski fell into a coma in 1988 and missed the fall of communism:
WARSAW, Poland (Reuters) — A 65-year-old railwayman who fell into a coma following an accident in communist Poland regained consciousness 19 years later to find democracy and a market economy, Polish media reported on Saturday.
Wheelchair-bound Jan Grzebski, whom doctors had given only two or three years to live following his 1988 accident, credited his caring wife Gertruda with his revival.
“It was Gertruda that saved me, and I’ll never forget it,” Grzebski told news channel TVN24.
“For 19 years Mrs. Grzebska did the job of an experienced intensive care team, changing her comatose husband’s position every hour to prevent bed-sore infections,” Super Express reported Dr. Boguslaw Poniatowski as saying.
“When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol lines were everywhere,” Grzebski told TVN24, describing his recollections of the communist system’s economic collapse.
“Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin.”
Welcome to the new world.

I want to wish Gertrude and Jack all the very best of luck for a happy and healthy future together. Her devotion along with G-d’s help, made his recovery.
All of us who have had a close relative in coma, pray for such a day. This does give us much hope to so many people. It also should be a strong message for physicians, who are so eager to remove life support. Being at home protected Jan from the deadly germs of the hospital. Feeding him by mouth nurtured him better than canned food/chemicals.
I pray that the millions of people reading this article appreciate what Gertrude has endured. She truly is remarkable. Her reward is “Jack’s” recovery - WAY TO GO GERTRUDE!

God bless this man because I would be pissed. Waking up two decades from now not knowing anything. Missing my childrens lives, the birth and lives of my grandkids and still not being completely functional, please. Then be awaken in time to deal with all the complications of being “older”. Why didn’t you just let me die? Ohhhh I get to be a scientific statistic, GREAT!!
