The Yankees lost again yesterday, in a manner that’s becoming familiar:
If fans had waited until July to watch the Yankees, they could have caught up in a hurry yesterday. The Yankees fell far behind early, chipped back, then watched it all slip away.
Sound familiar? That is the pattern of the Yankees’ dreary season after their fourth series loss in a row. The Oakland Athletics finished off the Yankees, 11-5, at Yankee Stadium. The stands were packed at the start and sparse at the finish. In the sixth inning, some bored fans did the wave.
“We need a well-pitched ballgame and we need to hit, and we need to do both on the same day a few times to feel good about ourselves,” Manager Joe Torre said. “Right now, we’re not feeling good about ourselves.”
For all the finger-pointing in players’ postgame comments last week — Andy Pettitte one day, Jorge Posada another — the mood yesterday was subdued, almost defeated. The Yankees have lost 9 of 11 games, and they have no explanations.
What’s even more frustrating, is that things could’ve been so much different:
I just noticed this: The Red Sox are 5-7 since June 18. Had the Yankees managed to go just 5-4 on that road trip and 2-1 against Oakland, they would be six games out and everybody would be talking about a summer pennant race.
Instead they are 11 out. Talk about missing a big chance. The Red Sox have been asking to get caught and the Yankees went the other way.
Sickening.
