More On The Fight Against The Abuser Fees

by @ 10:00 pm on July 17, 2007.

The Examiner reports on  the growing legal and political challenges to Virginia’s abuser fees:

Virginia defense lawyers are preparing to file legal challenges against the controversial new financial penalties imposed on motorists violating the state’s driving laws.

Public opposition also is climbing, as evidenced by an online petition to fight the fees that reported more than 91,000 signatures by Monday afternoon. Gov. Tim Kaine and leading legislators, however, are showing no signs of eliminating the sanctions or making major changes.

“We understand people have concerns, and we take those concerns seriously,” gubernatorial spokesman Kevin Hall said. “There will be an opportunity to review the fees in January. Until then, if you don’t drive drunk, engage in reckless driving or receive multiple speeding tickets, you should be OK.”

Unless, of course, you happen to be a citizen of one of the other 49 states, the District of Columbia, or a foreign country.

I’ve signed the petition. Have you ?
